Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art is dedicated to the collection, stewardship, and presentation of art by queer artists. Through exhibitions, public programs, and a growing permanent collection of over 30,000 artworks, the Museum connects audiences to the artistic methodologies created by LGBTQIA+ people.

In 1969, the collectors Charles Leslie and Fritz Lohman held an exhibition of art by gay artists at their Downtown New York loft. Their collection grew throughout the 1970s. During the AIDS crisis of the 1980s, the two collectors rescued the work of dying artists whose families, out of shame or ignorance, intended to destroy it. In 1990, the Leslie-Lohman Gay Art Foundation was established as a nonprofit organization; at the time, there was no precedent for a foundation with “gay” in its name. The foundation was accredited as a museum in 2016.

Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art remains a place to see art shaped by lived queer and trans experiences. The Museum endures through intention, protection, and insistence.

If you are an artist, collector, or dealer with artwork(s) you wish to be considered by the museum as a donation to our collection, please review and fill out the Artwork Donation Intake From. We do not consider donation offers via email, telephone, or walk-in. All artwork donation offers will be vetted by our staff and reviewed by the museum's Collections Committee to the Board. Do not ship, send, or bring original artworks to the museum; the museum cannot return artworks to senders and will assume no responsibility for the storage and care of unsolicited materials.
